Ways to prepare for a technical exam

You can prepare on your own with the free syllabus, its textbook list and older past papers, or add paid help: live courses such as OSPE's, tutoring such as EPIC Training's, or solved past exams such as CyberEd's at techexam.ca. They differ in format, in which exam codes they cover and in cost per exam, so compare them against the codes on your own assessment letter.

Engineers Canada publishes the examination syllabi. Each one lists the topics for an exam, and the textbooks that go with it; newer syllabi put the textbook list inside each exam's own document.

APEGA's technical exam page makes two useful points. Its questions are set from the exam description in the syllabus, not from the textbooks, so treat the books as general guides. And APEGA does not hand out past technical exams: it points candidates to Engineers and Geoscientists BC, which lists past exams from before 2020 for most topics.

Past papers show the style and length of real questions. Our past papers guide covers where to find them and how to use them without leaning on them too much.

Self-study with the syllabus textbooks

Self-study costs only the books and your time. It suits a P.Eng applicant who already knows the subject from their degree and needs structure more than teaching. The risk is spending weeks reading instead of writing full solutions under time, which is what the exams ask for.

If you go this way, build your plan from the syllabus checklist, buy or borrow the listed texts, and practise full written solutions against the clock. Our guides to the 11-CS-1 textbooks and the 16-Civ-A2 code books cover two common exams.

OSPE technical exam prep courses

OSPE runs live online courses for the PEO technical exams, with time for questions and practice between classes and materials to download for later study. Courses are 40, 36 or 10 hours long.

  • 40 hours: 16-Civ-A2 Elementary Structural Design
  • 36 hours: 11-CS-1 Engineering Economics; civil A1, A3, A5, A6, B7 and B10; electrical A1, A6 and B7; mechanical A2, A3, A4, B1, B2 and B6; and a mechatronics System Analysis and Control course
  • 10 hours: more than 100 shorter courses across Basic Studies and many disciplines

Its Fall 2026 courses ran between late July and October 2026. As of November 3, 2026, the page asks readers to watch for news on 2027 courses and registration, and it does not list prices. Questions about the courses go to the email address on OSPE's page.

EPIC Training tutoring and courses

EPIC Training's program page covers the technical and confirmatory exams that Canadian regulators assign, and names PEO and the other provincial and territorial regulators. Its courses are led by instructors and run on evenings and weekends.

  • One-on-one online tutoring at $120 an hour
  • Course fees and course lengths are not shown on the page
  • About 10 hours of study a week per course is expected
  • Previous exam questions are used as supporting material
  • Instructors may record classes and share them; students may not record

The same page also lists NPPE law and ethics workshops and a paid review service for experience reports.

CyberEd solved past exams at techexam.ca

CyberEd sells written solutions to past technical exams and says it has served candidates since 1997. Solutions are PDFs, sent by email link after purchase, that you can save and print. Some are sold to order and take up to 10 days.

Its catalogue spans Basic Studies, Complementary Studies, Group A and Group B exams in many disciplines, and P.Geo and OIQ exams. Prices are set exam by exam: on its 16-Civ-A1 page, one solved past exam costs $48, and bundles of three, six and nine cost $120, $215 and $295. Its FAQ says popular exams often work out under $5 a question and nearly all under $10, and that rarely written exams cost at most $180 an exam. Its FAQ notes that exams from after 2020 are protected by copyright and that the exam rules forbid sharing them.

Its FAQ suggests working past exam questions yourself and using its solutions to check your answers.

Practice PPE and CTTAM

Practice PPE (practiceppeexams.ca) is another name P.Eng applicants come across. As of November 3, 2026, its site leads with NPPE and CBA help. Its home page still has a technical exams section, but the link to its technical exam solutions returns to the home page, so we could not find a current technical exam offer to describe.

CTTAM's "technical exam" is a different exam. It is for certified technicians (C.Tech.) in Manitoba who want to reclassify as certified technologists (C.E.T.), not for P.Eng applicants. As of November 3, 2026, its page lists a $290 registration fee and a sitting on November 25, 2026.

How to choose a prep option

  • Exams covered: match the exact code on your assessment letter. Exam codes start with the syllabus edition, such as 16 in 16-Civ-A2, and the same subject can carry a different code in another edition, so check the title and syllabus too.
  • Format: a live class teaches, written solutions show method, and practice problems with timed mocks test you; you may want some of each.
  • Cost per exam: add up the price for every exam on your letter, not just the first one, and check what the price includes.
  • Live or self-paced: fixed class times suit some schedules; shift work or a young family often suits self-paced study.
  • How recent: APEGA says the technical exams moved from paper to computer-based exams with remote proctoring, which it delivers with EGBC and PEO. Older past papers may predate the current syllabus edition. Ask which sittings and syllabus a product is built on.

CertNova's own prep opens in January 2027, starting with 11-CS-1, 16-Civ-A1 and 16-Civ-A2, and waitlist members get access for $1. Whatever you choose, start from the syllabus and practise written solutions under time.
