Waiving exams through the CBA

Sometimes. APEGS, Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (since July 2025) and EGBC (under its Policy 1.C) let some applicants show their experience through the competency-based assessment instead of writing confirmatory exams. We have not found a published route like this at PEO.

Where it exists

  • APEGS: some members-in-training can waive confirmatory exams through the CBA; the Academic Review Committee decides who may.
  • Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba: since July 2025 engineering candidates can complete CBA Category 1 instead; if the experience is not accepted after three submissions, the exams must be written.
  • EGBC, Policy 1.C: for non-accredited degrees, with five or more years of experience in the degree discipline and a strong validation record (all validations positive, two P.Eng validators in your discipline, one recent supervisor who is a P.Eng). If both assessors accept every category, no exams are assigned; if only one does, the Credentials Committee decides.

Who it suits

These routes reward long, well-documented experience in the same discipline as your degree, validated by licensed P.Eng supervisors. If your experience is short, mixed or hard to validate, writing the exams is often faster than a CBA that is sent back.

Next steps

Read your regulator's current rules first. CertNova's P.Eng Guide covers these routes with their source documents, and CBA Pro helps you write the competencies they rely on.
