16-Civ-A6 Highway Design, Construction, and Maintenance
16-Civ-A6 Highway Design, Construction, and Maintenance is the roads exam in civil Group A. It runs from surveying a route and fixing its alignment, through the materials and structure of the pavement, to keeping a road in good condition once it is built.
Planned for wave 2.
Also written 16 Civ A6.
Reviewed by Reza Kashi, P.Eng. Updated .

What it covers
- Route surveying
- Geometric design: horizontal and vertical alignment and intersections
- Properties of road-making materials
- Asphalt mix design
- Pavement design: structural design of flexible and concrete pavements
- Earthworks and drainage
- Pavement management: condition evaluation, maintenance and rehabilitation
On exam day
- Closed book, with no aids (EGBC Fall 2026 schedule).
- Any non-communicating, non-programmable calculator.
- Written online and remotely proctored. EGBC's candidate guide describes a 15-minute grace period at the start and up to 30 minutes after the exam to upload your written solutions.
Texts the syllabus names
- F. L. Mannering, S. S. Washburn and W. P. Kilareski, Principles of Highway Engineering and Traffic Analysis
- R. P. Roess, E. S. Prassas and W. R. McShane, Traffic Engineering
- AASHTO, Guide for Design of Pavement Structures
- Asphalt Institute, The Asphalt Handbook (MS-4)
- Transportation Association of Canada, Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (Engineers Canada lists it under an older title, Geometric Design Standards for Canadian Roads)
- M. Y. Shahin, Pavement Management for Airports, Roads and Parking Lots
- Corrugated Steel Pipe Institute, Handbook of Steel Drainage and Highway Construction Products
What we are building
- Lessons that will work through alignment, pavement design and pavement management in the order the syllabus sets them
- Original problems on curves, intersections, asphalt mixes and pavement thickness, each with a worked solution
- Two closed-book timed mocks that will be marked by topic
Most tested, 2017 to 2019
These figures cover the six Highway Design papers from May 2017 to December 2019; the older 98-Civ-A6 papers were a different exam, Transportation Planning and Engineering. Flexible pavement design (34%), vertical alignment (26%) and horizontal alignment (19%) appeared in every sitting, while intersections, drainage, earthworks and route surveying never did; most papers offered seven 20-mark questions with five answered.
From 6 sittings and 38 questions of the papers EGBC published. Statistics only: we do not reproduce the questions. Read our method
| Topic | Sittings | Share of marks |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible pavement structural design | 6 of 6 | 34.0% |
| Vertical alignment and sight distance | 6 of 6 | 25.9% |
| Horizontal alignment and superelevation | 6 of 6 | 18.5% |
| Concrete pavement design | 4 of 6 | 9.1% |
| Pavement management, evaluation and rehabilitation | 3 of 6 | 4.9% |
| Asphalt mix design | 2 of 6 | 4.1% |
| Road-making materials | 2 of 6 | 3.5% |
